How to prepare nectar

Measuring cups

We typically funnel two (2) level 8oz cups of nectar into a 64 fluid ounce juice bottle - just right for filling most feeders. We fill the container with warm tap water, put on the cap and shake until the nectar is all dissolved. This can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

If after a while you notice black spots on the inside of your container that is mold. It will continue to grow and contaminate the entire mix. Discard any remaining mix and wash the container well.

If you prefer to mix smaller or larger batches of nectar we have worked out the measuring math for you so all you need is measuring cups.

The ratio of nectar to water is: one (1) part nectar to four (4) parts water.

For example:

  • 1 cup nectar to 4 cups water
  • 3/4 cup nectar to 3 cups water
  • 1/2 cup nectar to 2 cups water

DIRECTIONS

  • In a container mix four (4) parts warm tap water to one (1) part nectar. (A part can be any measuring device used for both the water and nectar).
  • Boiling water or filtered water will remove any contaminants but is not necessary to dissolve the nectar.
  • Please do not boil the nectar with the water as evaporation will change the ratio.
  • Shake until dissolved.
  • Allow to cool.
  • Fill feeders.
  • Store remaining liquid in refrigerator for up to two (2) weeks.
  • Wash feeders (dilute vinegar is best) and change nectar in feeders twice (2X) a week even if the nectar is not all consumed.
