With respect to product labeling, all of our products are properly labeled in accordance with the Food Allergen Labeling and Customer Protection Act of 2004 (FALCPA). A detailed procedure, Food Allergen Control Policy, is maintained as a part of the Corporation’s Quality System documentation. This policy addresses each of the areas that must be managed and controlled to realize effective allergen control.
Sucrose GMO Statement: To the best of our knowledge all Hummingbird Market, LLC sucrose products, and their ingredients are not developed using bioengineering or biotechnology. In addition, these same products are not considered genetically modified or are not derived from a genetically modified organism as defined by the European Community directives 1 830/2003/EC on labeling and traceability and 1 829/2003/EC on genetically modified food and feed and any impending legislation.
Sucrose Irradiation Statement: Our sucrose products are not irradiated. Our supplier uses only hot water and/or steam sterilization in our cane refining process.
Sucrose Pesticide Statement: Please be assured that no pesticides are used in the manufacture of any of sucrose products sold/marketed by Hummingbird Market, LLC. The limited application and use of any pesticides and/or insecticide chemicals at all of our manufacturing locations is totally controlled by licensed contract Pest Control Operators who are required to provide extensive documentation regarding the location, quantity, and timing of applications of any such material. Our supplier randomly tests incoming off-shore (foreign) raw cane sugar once per year for the following pesticides: organo-phosphates, organo-nitrogen, organo-chlorides, and methyl carbamate. Since the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) establishes pesticide levels for domestic food ingredients/supplies, we do not conduct pesticide analysis for domestically sourced raw sugar (Florida, Louisiana, Texas, or Hawaii). All such analysis to date has indicated none of these compounds have been present in our incoming supply of raw sugar. As a result, we do not test our finished products for pesticides since we are totally assured none can be present in any of our products. Our intention is to continue this annual random pesticide testing program for raw sugar.
DEXTROSE
Dextrose Animal Statement: Our products do not contain any ingredient of animal origin.
The processing aid used to produce these products is not derived from animal origins.
The equipment used for manufacturing this product is not used for the manufacture of products of animal origin or products containing ingredients of animal origin.
This product is manufactured from corn.
Dextrose GMO: Hummingbird Market, LLC’s dextrose products are manufactured from corn. Our supplier purchases the corn used from manufacturing plants from the U.S. corn market. Current growing techniques and grain handling systems intersperse various varieties of corn so it is difficult to segregate the non-GMO corn from the GMO corn varieties. There are no systems in place for the segregation of the quantities of non-GMO corn needed to supply the hundreds of thousands of bushels needed daily by our manufacturing plants.
This product is produced from genetically engineered ingredients, but no genetic material is detectable. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing of the product gives a negative result.
As corn pollinates via wind we are unable to control Mother Nature. And we are unable to control where the bees decide to cross-pollinate.
Dextrose Lead: In 2012 the lead results contained in our dextrose was <0.2 ppm
Dextrose Micro: Our supplier program consists of two parts. The first consists of process controls; these include solids control, which prevents growth, and micro filtration that removes organism from the dextrose feed. As a follow up, weekly production samples of crystallized dextrose are monitored for Total Plate Count, Mold and Yeast, and direct counts.
Typical levels are as follows:
- Total plate count - 1,000 max grams
- Mold-100 max/ gram
- Yeast- 100 max /gram.
Individual batches of Hummingbird Market dextrose are not tested for bacteria due the nature of the product. Therefore, microbiological results are not available for the Certificate of Analysis.
Dextrose Nanotechnology: Nanotechnology is not used in the manufacturing of Hummingbird Market, LLC hummingbird products.
Dextrose Natural: Whether a food incorporating Hummingbird Market’s dextrose can be designated as “natural.” The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not promulgated regulations restricting the use of the term “natural” on food labels. The agency considered doing so in 1993, as part of the regulations implementing the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act. However, while FDA stated that a regulatory definition of the term might prove useful to consumers, it chose not to establish one at that time. While the agency did not set a regulatory definition for the term, it did provide some guidance as to how it could accurately be used on food labels. As a general matter, FDA’s view on this issue is that the term “natural” means “nothing artificial or synthetic (including all color additives regardless of source) has been included in, or has been added to, a food that would not normally be expected to be in the food.” The FDA could change its views on this issue in the future. Thus, manufacturers must understand that label changes may become necessary should FDA choose to revisit this issue.
Our dextrose made from corn starch that has been hydrolyzed with commonly used mineral acids or enzymes. While the starch is no longer in its “raw” state in the finished product, no artificial or synthetic ingredients are added, and no substances are added that a consumer would not expect to be present.
We hope that this information is useful. However, it is ultimately up to the final user to determine whether or not they wish to consider dextrose as “natural”.
Dextrose Carbon Black: Carbon Black (CAS #1 333864; F153) is not used nor added to the manufacturing process, nor is it expected to be present. It is not tested in the product either.
Dextrose Diacetyl: Diacetyl is not used during the production process of Hummingbird Market, LLC’s products. Our supplier also has security measures in place to assure Diacetyl cannot be “intentionally introduced” during the production of our dextrose. Because there is no reason to believe Diacetyl is present in the products, Hummingbird Market, LLC and it’s supplier does not test for Diacetyl.
Dextrose Melamine: Melamine (cyanuramide) is not used in the manufacture of Hummingbird Market, LLC’s dextrose. Melamine (cyanuramide) is not added to our finished products. Hummingbird Market, LLC and its supplier does not test for melamine (cyanuramde).
Dextrose Origin: Our dextrose product is manufactured in the USA from domestically grown dent corn in a Decatur, IL plant. Corn is the only commodity ingredient used to manufacture our dextrose at this facility. This product is eligible for NAFTA - HTS is 1702.30
Dextrose Technical Data Sheet: Hummingbird Market, LLC and its supplier’s dextrose, the ultimate product of starch hydrolysis, is produced by a patented enzyme conversion process developed by our supplier. This unique process makes possible the efficient production of extremely high quality crystalline dextrose free of the flavor, color and yield difficulties of other processes. Our dextrose is the monohydrate form of dextrose. It is completely fermentable, readily soluble in water, and is about 65-80% as sweet as sucrose, depending on the solids concentration of the system in which it is used. Hummingbird Market, LLC dextrose contains about 8.5% moisture as water-of-crystallization but essentially no “free” moisture.
Manufactured in a modern plant under electronically-controlled conditions, Hummingbird Market, LLC and its supplier dextrose exhibits excellent purity and uniformity. A unique combination of enzyme conversion, carbon decolorization, resin refining and controlled crystallization produces a relatively free-flowing product with superior flavor, excellent color and very low ash. It also eliminates unwanted trace minerals that might affect shelf life or fermentability.
Applications
- Our supplier(s) dextrose is used in the baking industry as a fermentable carbohydrate in the production of bread, rolls, buns and sweet doughs. It is utilized in other food products, such as prepared mixes, confections and canned foods, for its ability to enhance natural or added flavors without imparting excessive sweetness, and in the meat packing industry as a spice carrier.
- Our supplier(s) dextrose is also used in brewing to produce alcohol and natural carbonation, and by pharmaceutical industries for the production of antibiotics. Its high purity makes it an excellent raw material in the chemical industry for the production of sorbitol and gluconates.
